Accurately measuring volume and excuvated quantity requires a high end scanning device. When the Bonfol special waste tip required about 114,000 tonnes of special waste to be removed and monitored they sought such an instrument. The solution the found was the Leica ScanStation 2.

In 2000, the Canton Jura and representatives of the Basel chemical industry agreed to carry out a final rehabilitation of the special waste landfill.

The Requirements: In order to calculate and record the volume of contaminated special waste material excavated every day, a permanently installed, efficient measuring system that captures the current surface contours remotely and transmits the measured data to the consultant engineer's office was required. In addition, the measuring system was required to provide a remote view to observe the operation and the current situation on-site in real time. A further challenge was that measurement operations could not take place inside the hall itself (the “black zone”), as the excavation work was to proceed largely automatically and without any human presence.

The Answer: Leica Geosystems ScanStation 2: A measuring concept was devised in conjunction with CSD Ingenieure AG and L+R 3D Vermessungen AG. The scanning system is started by telephone and controlled over the Internet using remote-control software.

The scanning of the main and target markers is controlled semi-automatically within Leica Cyclone SCAN by means of a script. This allows the scan to be performed with just a few commands. Afterwards, the measured data is transferred quickly and easily by FTP server to the office.

If required, the 360° digital camera integrated into the ScanStation 2 can capture images for enhanced visualization and documentation. The measured data is georeferenced in the office and the differential volumes modelled in Leica Cyclone SURVEY.

The results and point clouds are then visualized in a CAD environment using Leica CloudWorx for AutoCAD, after which they can be further processed and displayed in other CAD software.

At a later stage, the locations of ground probes can be recorded and included in the model. Measurements can be made directly with the 3D laser scanner or the probes can be surveyed using a Leica TPS1200 total station.

Leica Viva - Expanding your opportunities

Leica Viva perfectly merges GNSS receivers, total stations, laser scanners, data collectors, and other essential measurement technology, and with the assistance of Geomatic Resources LLC, they have been working on providing real-time market feedback on the Viva System.

In the US the two companies recently worked with Frontier Surveying Company, who specialise in gas field support, to bring Leica Viva to the highly competitive Barnett Shale region.

From a gas surveyor's perspective, the two main areas of work are the boundary work associated with gas extraction pads, and support surveying for pipeline construction. Leica Viva has been outstanding in both areas, according to Senior Project Manager Allen Peloquin: "There are a lot of firms chasing this work", he says, "and we depend on outstanding technology for a competitive edge. Upgrading to Viva has definitely been a good move for us."

Leica Viva offers the latest GNSS technology which means more efficient and accurate work can be completed. Allen Peloquin says "GNSS capacity has made a big difference for us," he adds, "We've had jobs in the past where we lost money because we couldn't get lock—that doesn't seem to happen anymore. In fact, sometimes I'll be in the truck and the 'little lady' (the Viva's voice notification recording) will speak up from the back and tell me we have lock. It's impressive."

By extending the reach of GNSS work, and smoothly tying together all aspects of survey work, Leica's Viva can help companies to grow and gain market share in the extraction and numerous other survying industries.

Tunnel Surveying - New technology for old tasks
The section of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's $2.1 billion No. 7 Line Extension project that stretches under several blocks on Manhattan's far West Side didn’t present any unexpected challenges for its surveyors … but that’s only because loose ground requiring freezing, working around an underground orchestra of heavy equipment, strict construction tolerances and aggressive construction schedules fall well within "expected conditions."

Until recently, tunnel surveying has relied heavily on old technologies. Despite the many additional challenges that surveying underground faces compared to above ground there was a slow adoption of new survey technology like reflectorless/robotic total stations and 3D laser scanning.

But with the demand for higher accuracy and tighter budgets, the latest technologies are providing the answer and leading this field of technology is Amberg Technologies.

On the No. 7 Line Extension, S3II Tunnel Constructors, a J.F. Shea, Skanska and Schiavone JV, has deployed a complete tunnel surveying solution from Amberg Technologies, a Swiss company. The system automates common tunnelling tasks and utilizes a high-speed Amberg 3D laser scanner specially adapted for tunnel scanning: a Leica Geosystems robotic/reflectorless total station with an onboard Amberg tunnelling software package and an Amberg office software suite...view full article
