Each year Nottingham Trent University brings in an external company to provide training on GNSS equipment and procedures for second year Civil Engineering students, many of whom go on to a year's placement on construction sites or with surveying companies.

This year SCCS – The Surveying Equipment Company kindly helped out, sending NTU alumnus Muneer Hassan with two other members of staff Tom Button and Will Livermore, who is an NTU civil engineering student on placement with the company.

Muneer (Technical Sales & Support Manager at SCCS) led the instruction of five 3-hour classes over three days, covering mapping to OS co-ordinates, transformation from WGS84 via OS to local plane grid and setting-out, with other exercises along the way. NTU students appreciated the opportunity to learn and practise with the latest equipment - all hands-on, as SCCS kindly supplied one instrument set per three students.

“The students enjoyed and appreciated Muneer's teaching style, with numerous anecdotes relating to situations encountered on site in the course of his work, and very valuable reinforcement of NTU teaching of good practice such as independent checks at every stage, work ethic and professionalism.

The NTU civil engineering team are very appreciative of Muneer and the SCCS team’s support (thank you, Paul MacArthur), and look forward to working together again in the future.”
